In medieval and renaissance times, “La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia” (the Most Serene Republic of Venice) was a hub for trade and a maritime power that exercised its dominance over the seas.
Built on a group of 118 small islands in a shallow lagoon, ‘La Serenissima’ had annexed a large part of Northeastern Italy, the regions of Istria, Dalmatia, the present territory of Montenegro, Albania, the Peloponnese, as well as numerous islands in the Adriatic and Ionian seas including Corfu, Crete and Cyprus.
